The secret powers of time

A subject which I would love to control better in my own life: time.

Professor Philip Zimbardo (Emeritus of Psychology at Stanford University) conveys how our individual perspectives of time affect our work, health and well-being. Time influences who we are as a person, how we view relationships and how we act in the world.

Animation
Besides the interesting views, the nice thing of this discourse is the animation of it. I think it’s a great way to make scientific subjects available and interesting for a large crowd.

The animation is made by RSA Animate, part of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA).

Great find: Gary Numan’s unreleased 7-UP commercial from 1982

In 1982, American-based 7-UP got in touch with a UK agency to get a 30 second tune made by someone who was ‘happening’ at the time to advertise their drink.

Expecting something punk
So the agency contacted new wave hero Gary Numan and offered a £10,000 deal. He recorded 3 pieces of music with lyrics supplied by them. When the recordings were sent to the Americans they had not heard any music like this. They were expecting something in a punk style as that had just arrived overseas. Numan’s recordings were never used.

Classic
This demo is a great historical find of aliveinsound. What would have happened if 7-UP approved the demo? I think it’s definitely a classic commercial tune. So, what are we waiting for: Let’s remix! (Before YouTube removes it due to copyright violation).

Kim Carnes
I don’t knwow for sure, but it could have been that 7-UP finally chose for the famous song of Kim Carnes. Her song is from the same period and I have to admit it’s a classic too:

YouTube classic: Chocolate Rain

In the five year history of YouTube there were some brilliant virals. Not made by slick pr agency’s, but pure and honest performances of ordinary people which led some how to enormous popularity on the internet.

52 million hits
The song Chocolate Rain by singer Tay Zonday was one of them. It started with his hilarious clumsy video for his song in 2007. In the weeks after his upload, people start to make parodies of it. It endend with thousands of parodies, appearances on national US talk shows, invitations by the Google staff, an exclusive promotion deal for Dr Pepper’s Cherry Coke and more than 52 million hits.

It kept me laughing for weeks, and even now, three years later, Tay makes me smile every time I see a related video.

And so on. Check out the whole list if you can handle more.

Interview Steve Jobs

One week before the release of the new iPhone 4 on june 7th, Apple CEO Steve Jobs did an interview on the All Things Digital Conference organized by the Wall Street Journal. He talks about the absence of Flash on the iPhone and iPad.

It strikes me that after so much success with Apple and being just recovered of a liver transplant, Jobs talks with continuous energy, passion and ambition.

Jobs at the Boston Macworld Expo in 1997
For some historical perspective I added also Job’s keynote at the Boston Macworld Expo in 1997. Jobs explains here his plans for the future of Apple, which is at that moment almost bankrupted. Certainly one of the defining moments in the history of the computer industry:

Impressive debut Janelle Monáe on the Dave Letterman Show

On May 18th Janelle Monáe (1985) made her debut on national television on the Dave Letterman Show.

Funky
She is a fresh and very talented singer-song-writer. She makes music in the spirit of James Brown and Michael Jackson. She stands out from the predictable contemporary R&B artists with her energy, great voice and funky dance moves.

Inspired by Iceland: My heart is beating like a jungle drum

EyjafjallajškullLately I was visiting Iceland during the outburst of Iceland’s volcano Eyjafjallajökull. I was very impressed by Iceland’s nature and people. My boss tipped me about the new promotion video of Iceland’s tourist board. Great capture of Iceland’s nature and spirit with music of the lovely Emilíana Torrini.
