This picture of mega dance act Justice playing 'live' will definitely endorse the predjudice that dance acts do nothing more than starting a DAT tape. Justice's official remark was that the the usb plug came out during the performance.
This is why I love YouTube: maybe the guy in the video doesn't look like a superstar trance producer, but if you just listen to his music, it could easily be the new hit of Armin van Buuren/Tiësto/Ferry Corsten. The guy is the 21 year old Johannes Berthold, a.k.a. JayB, from Germany. He has produced several albums and gives his music away for free.
They are not exactly playing the music I like, nevertheless it is a great achievement that three dj's from my country are in this year's top ten of best dj's of the world. Number 1: Armin van Buuren, numer two: Tiësto and number seven Ferry Corsten. Here’s the official video for Ferry Corsten’s latest single, Radio Crash, from Twice In A Blue Moon. The album is available now digitally and in the stores on Jan 27, 2009.
In the mid nineties, I was a great fan of drum and bass, which was a at that point a totally new sound in the dance scene. One of my heroes was John B. He was, just like me, heavily influenced by Kraftwerk, which you could clearly hear in his music. He always combined melodious synth lines with heavy processed drum and bass rhythms. Later on his music even ended up as an independent style within the drum and bass genre: trance and bass. Although i visited a lot of drum and bass parties in the nineties, i never have seen John B playing live.
Now, more than ten years later, he will be performing this coming friday 21th november at Tivoli, Utrecht. I will be there, hoping he will play some old nineties stuff as well! Some things have been changed though. The nerdy student Chemical Biology has tranformed into a superstar dj with a fetish for fashion from the eighties:
Moby has done a cool video competition. He challenged fans to make a video for his song Ooh Yeah from his latest album Last Night. The prize for the winner was a $10,000 incentive and the release as the official video for Ooh Yeah. I am a great fan of user generated content, thats why i love Youtube in the first place.
It is fortifying to see that artists like Moby, Björk, Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead give away their content to their fans to receive very rewarding contributions in return. Often much more original than the material of established video artists:
Ocarina is a new music app for the iPhone. It responds to your breath, so you can control the pitch via the multi-touch pad while you control the dynamics with your breath. I won't buy it, because it's mainly a gadget, but it shows again the potential of iPhone apps.
Armin van Buuren has been voted for the second time number one dj of the world by the readers of DJ Mag. Last year the dutch dj and producer was voted number one as well. Recently Armin van Buuren was interviewed by a New York radio station. In the interview he talks about his success as a trance producer:
And there it is, after the release of Beatmaker in july, the second full blown music app is out now for the iPhone: Noise.io. It is a full featured sofware synth with many possibilities and stunning sound. The app is recommended highly in most reviews.
Now, we just need an app which can host more than one app at the same time, so Beatmaker and Noise.io can be used together. Plus the possibility to control those apps with external control surfaces. Then the iPhone is the ultimate portable music instrument, on stage and in the studio :)
Kaossilator ad for the Japanese and Chinese market (i guess). The commercial breaks on Dutch television would be a lot more bearable with this kind of video's:
It's no surpise, when Moby releases a new album, a couple of months later we can welcome a remix compilation of that same album. On November 25th Moby will release the inevitable remixes of his latest album Last Night. The interesting part is that you can listen the remixes already on the music streaming site Last FM. Check the overview on Last FM here.
Synthpond is a nice sound generator and sequencer for the iPhone. It can generate sounds like astroids in space. I am curious how soon it wil be possible to sync this kind of apps with software on the pc or harware modules. Then it will be really interesting for music production.
