The unbelievable story of the Flash Crash

Last week I watched the documentary on the Flash Crash of the US stock markets on may 6th 2010. A crash of almost 1000 points on the Wall Street Stock Exchange. This has never been seen before. The market capitulated, but recovered as fast as it crashed. The whole crash didn’t last for more than 5 minutes.

Computers have taken over
The Dutch VPRO documentary inevestigates the causes of the immense free fall of the stock rates and comes to the bizarre conclusion that computer programs independently decide buying or selling stock literally at the speed of light.

The algoritmes of these programs are so sophisticated that their makers seem to have lost control on the machines. Does this really mean that computers have taken over the international stock exchange?

Nice tune to start new year’s day: Good Day Today by David Lynch

I like this song from David Lynch. It has something purifying. At the end of the year legendary director David Lynch amazed everybody by releasing his own electronic song Good Day Today.

Of course this kind of experiments makes him subject to a lot of critisism of the purists, but I think it’s not very hard to hear the surrealistic approach which is so characteristic in all of his work. A nice tune to start or end with, depending your situation this morning.

The supporting video is made by a fan.

Christmas Carol 2.0

A contemporary, I think Chinese, Christmas Carol about a girl who decides to stop her artificial respiration by hacking the computer of her neurosurgeon.

Little Matchgirl
Some may find this video profoundly depressing and/or offensive, but basically, the moral is more or less the same in one of the most famous Christmas stories: The Little Matchgirl by Hans Christian Andersen, written in the 19th century. The girl escapes her misery by freezing to death outside in the night because nobody wants to buy her matches.
